High school basketball: No. 9 Simeon remains undefeated with 53-51 win over No. 8 Imhotep Charter

No. 9 Simeon (Chicago) remained undefeated by taking down No. 8 Imhotep Charter (Philadelphia) 53-51 in the Highland Shootout on Saturday.

With the game knotted at 51, Simeon senior Miles Rubin got open underneath the basket and slammed it home to give the Wolverines the two-point lead with 18 seconds left. Moments later, the game was a final as Imhotep missed a 3-pointer that would have won the game.

Miles and brother Wesley Rubin led Simeon in scoring with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while senior Sam Lewis added 12 points and Jalen Griffith chipped in 11.

Junior Ahmad Nowell led Imhotep Charter with a game-high 16 points and Justin Edwards added 13, including a pair of highlight dunks before fouling out with 2:56 to play.

After trailing 26-23 at halftime, Simeon closed out the game strong by outscoring the Panthers by five points in the second half.

Simeon jumped out to a 19-10 first-quarter lead by scoring seven unanswered points to end the frame, including a 3-pointer by Griffith with under a minute to play.

The second quarter was all Imhotep. While Simeon scored four points in the quarter, the Panthers climbed back and took a 22-21 lead on a basket from Nowell. Nowell had seven second-quarter points and Imhotep took a 26-23 lead into intermission.

Simeon regained the lead in the third quarter when Miles Rubin grabbed an offensive rebound and went up strong for the putback basket midway through the quarter. By the end of the third the Wolverines had built up a five-point cushion.

Imhotep kept knocking on the door in the fourth quarter but could never take the lead.

Down 44-41 midway through the third, Edwards, a five-star Kentucky commit, got a steal and a breakaway dunk to cut the Simeon lead to a point.

Then with 31 seconds to play and Imhotep trailing 51-48, senior Yahmir Satterfield tied the game at 51 with a 3-point basket.

With Simeon having a chance at the last shot, Griffith, the point guard, found Wesley Rubin wide-open under the basket to take the lead with 18 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Imhotep got off a clean look, but it didn’t fall and Simeon improved to 14-0 in Robert Smith’s final season as head coach.
