Michigan Distance Crew Leads Way on Final Day of Lenny Lyles Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Members of the Wolverines’ talented distance crew, headlined by top-two finishes from Cole Johnson and Henry Johnson in the 800 meters, made their mark on Saturday (Jan. 28) as the University of Michigan men’s track and field team closed out the second day of the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational at the Norton Healthcare Sport and Learning Center.

Finishing 1-2 at 800 meters in 1:50.06 and 1:50.33, respectively, Cole Johnson and Henry Johnson both beat the previous facility and meet record of 1:51.22. Henry Johnson’s time earned him a new career best. Following closely behind was Thomas Shilgaliswho ran 1:51.62 to take seventh in a tight race.

The distance group had similar success in the 3,000 meters, where Tom Brady ran 7:58.31 to set a new facility and meet record. Michael Hancock (8:14.80, career best) and Ian Hill (8:17.38) placed in the top 20 of the event, taking 13th and 16th respectively. Myles Liss-Riordan took 34th in a time of 8:36.58.

In the field events, the Wolverines set a trio of career bests. Henry Sheldon took third in the open pole vault, clearing 5.08 meters (16 feet, 8 inches) for a new career-best. Cole Sheldon cleared 4.78m (15 feet, 8.25 inches) to clinch seventh place, also setting a career best. In the triple jump, Tianhao Wei took sixth place, with a leap of 14.63m (48 feet), a career best by nearly two feet.

Jacob Koerner, Dubem Amen, Lawrence Gilliamand Cole Johnson took third in the 4×400 relay, running 3:13.06. Their time beat the previous meet record, although it did not set a new one. Amene competed for the first time this season in the event.

The Wolverines will be on the road next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 3-4) at the Mayo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Start times for both days are to be announced.
